Recognizing Our Limits

As this new school year has arrived with all its joys and troubles, I’ve come face to face with my own limitations. I like to believe that I can keep things under control and do them well - pursue important relationships, keep up the blog, be an educator during a pandemic, keep up with teaching yoga, be active on social media, continue learning how to weave, read new books, keep up a healthy relationship with Jesus, be an active church member, exercise, and stay healthy.
What I’m realizing is that all of these good and beautiful things may not be possible during this season, but I’m coming to terms with that and deciding on pursuing the things that bring me life, energy, and point to me back to a God who is loving me in my weariness.
I don’t know where this is finding you, but if you’re in a season where you’re recognizing your own limitations, here are some questions I’ve used to help me figure out what to pursue when I can’t do it all.
What is essential?
For me these are the things that I am not able to/not willing to give up:
- Time with Jesus
- Teaching
- Health & rest
- Relationships with friends and family
What is life-giving?
These are the things in life I love doing, and can fit in around my essentilas as time permits - they’re are not “must-do’s” but “want to’s”
- Practicing yoga
- Reading new books
- Writing on the blog
- Participating in a church small group

What is “on deck?”
These are things that I’ve found are wonderful, but may not be the things I have time or the energy for at the moment, but instead are things that would be “up next” as soon as I find I’ve got the time and available energy:
- Teaching yoga
- Growing in my weaving abilities
- Being active on social media
Here are some fabulous books I’ve read that can help you beyond these questions if you’re in a busy season and you’re wanting to work through what you have the time/energy for:
- Try Softer - Aundi Kolber (current read and I’m loving it!)
- The Best Yes - Lysa TerKeurst
- Present Over Perfect - Shauna Niequist
- The Common Rule - Justin Whitney Earley
- Sacred Rhythms - Ruth Haley Barton
With Love,
Audrey
